Are you ready to see the most infectious, light up the world smile ever??!! This little girl was another one of my Watch Me Grow Babies, and our final session of that first year is always a little bittersweet. However, there is so much to celebrate…like a first birthday!

One of my goals for this year is to finally get caught up on blogging. Full disclosure…that was also a goal last year. Anywho…in order to get caught up…you have to go back a ways. This session took place almost a year ago…right before 2020 became TWENTY-TWENTY.

In fact, I’ve seen this sweet girl’s family again since this session and can’t wait to share that one with you sooner than later, I promise!

Oh how I love getting to see my “Watch Me Grow” families so often! These babies (and their siblings) grow and change so fast, even a few months can make such a big difference!

I often refer to the third photo session of our yearly packages as the “sitter” session. They usually take place when the babe is about 7-8 months old, and most babies feel pretty big time because they can now sit up on assisted. Often (not always), they are not quite taking off crawling yet, so I also refer to it as the potted plant stage. You sit them there…and they will stay, and usually smile about it!

This little guy’s grin was just the sweetest! He would light up with his mama and daddy, and thought his sister was the greatest!

I always schedule a few minutes to chat over the phone with my clients before a photo session. I think it helps everyone to feel a little more at ease, and I also like answer any questions they may have as well as give input to outfits, etc. We all know that’s the hardest part in preparing for a family photo session!

Even before we chat over the phone, my clients will have filled out a get to know you form where they can share additional info about their family. This is especially helpful with young kids. I love to hear more about their personalities, likes and dislikes…what gets them to laugh or open up. This family had shared that one of their kiddos was much quieter than the others, and would be al little slower to warm up. Mom also told me that one of these kiddos would be quite the hamm…I’ll let you try and figure out who. I don’t think it will be that hard!

Not all pictures need to capture joy (one of my favorite things to freeze a moment in), but also just as important are those cuddles, and quieter moments where they need that reassurance and love. Honestly, as a mom, those are the images I’m probably drawn to the most.

Not every “newborn” session needs to be shot right away…especially with the year we’ve had. This sweet at home photo session was done when Blair was about 2 1/2 months old, and we were delighted to capture a little bit more of his personality. Check out those sweet smiles he gave us!

We also got to include two pretty cute fur-babies who are just as enamored with Blair as everyone else. Newborn and baby sessions are always family photo sessions in my book. Yes, we still get plenty of pictures of your little one…they are still the star of the show! However, I love capturing emotion and relationships…connection is so important. That doesn’t happen without everyone involved!

Are you ready to see my favorite family photo session from 2020?

This family has been with me for several years and I love any chance I have to photograph them. They are beautiful on the inside and out and they just seem to enjoy each other…which helps make my job a little easier. =)

I felt like we had already used several of my “go-to” locations so I asked them if they were up for something a little different. They were game and we headed to a more rustic location I usually shoot at. The light was gorgeous and there was amble space to work with.

As I always do, we discussed outfit choice (including footwear) ahead of time. It’s really important for safety (and for the way your photos turn out), for your wardrobe to align with whatever location we are using. I would advise against wearing open toed shoes or sandals in a field such as this, for example. And heels with toddlers in any location is probably not a great idea….although this momma has also pulled that off beautifully before too!

Safety is always my number one concern during photo sessions. In light of COVID, I’ve found myself pulling out my long lens a lot more lately. This allows me to get some gorgeous portraits with beautiful bokeh while remaining a safe distance away.

For this fall session, I kept that lens on the entire time! It was a fun experiment that may have me doing that more often. We started this session super early in the morning, just after sunrise. For the first few minutes, I wondered if the fog was ever going to break, but break it did! You must scroll down to check out that gorgeous morning light. I was giddy watching Evelyn dance with her daddy backlit by a beautiful sunrise. She even had an outfit change because…why not??! Little sister was tuckered out by the end and decided to snooze…but that allowed us to get some sweet pictures cuddling too.

It’s always so special when a family invites me back into their home for another newborn session to welcome the newest member of their family. I absolutely love to see these babies (who were newborns the last time I saw them), take on their new promotion of big sister/brother.

Often, it’s those siblings who end up stealing the show, but no one seems to mind..especially my camera! Little big sister was the shining star in this family photo session although I couldn’t get enough of sweet big brother either. You can just tell how much he adores his new little brother! He was such a natural at holding the baby and gently guiding little sister to peek over the crib at the baby. (You must scroll through my overshare to see that sweet picture!)

I also love the color scheme of this family photo shoot. Mom did a great job picking out complimenting neutrals with just the right touch of color & texture to complement her decorating style.

Locations can have a big impact on your family photo session. Photographers guard little known locations like the treasure they are. I’m always on the look out while driving, keeping my eyes peeled for beautiful light and safe spots for families. They are not as easy to come by as you may think…especially here in The Woodlands!

I’m going to let you in on a little secret though. You know where my my very favorite location is? I’m not even afraid to share it….because it’s exclusive to only YOU! Your home, your sacred family space is my very favorite location to shoot at.

Some people panic when they first think about this. But what if my home isn’t “photo worthy”? It’s not as decorated….it’s not as beautiful…it’s not as new… You see what you’re doing there? When you let those thoughts or concerns take over, you’re comparing your sacred space to someone else’s. The reason I absolutely love shooting in clients homes is because they are such a true reflection and happy place for that family. This is where your memories are made!

This is especially true for little ones. That nursery isn’t going to be a nursery forever! By scheduling a photo session in your home, you are essentially creating a time capsule that you will look back on and it will bring it all back like it was just yesterday. Trust me on this….these days may feel long but the years go oh so fast.

My all time favorite session of my own family was taken in our home in California right before we moved. I’m so grateful. Also…it made it easier to enjoy a glass of wine with my husband right before our afternoon session! Everybody was happy. It was a win-win, and the photos showed that.

This sweet family invited me in to capture their little guy, who was around 7 months at the time of the session. He was just sitting up but not quite crawling…lots of firsts going on. We photographed about half the session in the nursery and then worked in other rooms where they enjoyed hanging out as a family. I loved everything about it!

Amend Family / The Woodlands TX Family Photographer

I love getting to see this family every year for their fall photos. If you can believe it…when we started, their youngest was just turning one! Now, they have almost three tweenagers!

Erin always knocks wardrobe out of the park with her crew! I loved seeing them pile out of the car in all of their pops of color…that golden yellow was perfect with the golden hour light. Notice…it’s not all about perfectly coordinating…it’s having fun with some color and prints while letting each family member show off their own style and personality.

Family photo sessions with older kids are a little different than with little ones. We are chatting and laughing the entire time…helping everybody loosen up and not take themselves too seriously. I’ve found that that “tween”ager age can dish it right back out with each other and their parents! Whatever keeps everyone loose and laughing is fair game.

Charlotte is ONE / The Woodlands TX Family Photographer

If I told you when this session was shot, then you would know that I’m almost a full year behind in blogging. So we’ll just pretend this birthday girl isn’t about to celebrate another one soon. Charlotte and her family, including big sister, were one of my Watch Me Grow families last year. These first birthday photo shoots are always a little bittersweet because it’s the final session of our year together!

Watch Me Grow packages (newborn, 4 month, 8 month and birthday) are always extra special when a family decides to move homes in the middle of that year! I loved that this family wanted to have the session in the backyard of their gorgeous new home. I know they will look back on that first year and remember not one but TWO special places where their babies had so many first milestones.
